Renewable energy powers new web site hosting company

There are thousands of web hosting companies out there. A host is a company that owns computers which are connected to the internet 24 hours a day 7 days a week. They make web sites available so that when you type in a domain name like a dot com or a dot net the web site your looking for will be there.

There's a new web hosting company on the block, but this one does things a little differently, it runs completely off renewable energy. Sustainable Host was started in December of 2002 by Mike Hills, a first year college student from southern New Hampshire.

Sustainable Host is specializing in small business and non profit organization web sites.

The company has three custom made servers requiring 75 watts/hour each. With these three servers they are able to host several web sites and can easily expand when new growth is needed. The servers are running off electricity generated by a solar array on the roof. Currently Sustainable Host has 8 120 watt BP SOlar SX-120-U panels which produce approximately 5800 watts per day. The server computers only consume approximately 5400 watts per day."We have been setup for over a month now. There was a short utility power outage a couple weeks ago due to a bad ice storm but we maintained 100% uptime with our servers due to our solar array." Boasts founder Mike Hills.

Prices to host a web site with Sustainable Host are competitive with other hosting companies which just goes to show that green companies can be competitive when it comes to pricing. Sustainable Host is taking a step forward that other companies should sincerely try to follow. Hopefully one day a company won't be boasting that it runs off sustainable energy because every company will be able to boast the same.
